I’ve been asking why it's so normal in filmmaking to ask for donations & support. Here’s my reply: The idea is the story a film is telling is a story worth showing the world. If that is the case, then the topics and themes in a movie are worth more than the price of a DVD; they are worth making sure a larger population will see it.
And patrons have existed for …ever (since Rome). Artists provided entertainment, new ways of seeing the world, and sometimes were used as endorsements towards a patron’s social or political ambitions. Sometimes I forget that filmmaking/documentaries are an art form. I am an artist. I often feel like I’m trying to run a business, and I am, but when it comes down to it, my main goal is storytelling in an artistic manner.
